Hollywood's
Responsibility for Smoking Deaths
Smoking, I
once believed, was every person's right. Efforts to stop it were
politically correct, a Big Brother assault on personal freedoms. I
put all these views into my scripts. In one of my movies, "Basic
Instinct,"...

Islam and the
Environment, theory, and practice (Dr. Mawil Izzi Dien)
The paper
discusses some aspects of the industrialisation effects on the natural
environment in the Middle East in general. While Islam as a religion has
a deep sense of respect and consideration for the natural environment (Izzi
Dien, 1990), the current status quo in Muslim countries is not
noticeably different to that in the rest of the world. The paper submits
that this is because industrial culture has overtaken traditional
culture leading to the prevalence of materialistic values over the
intrinsic.
The
Nation is Captive to Alcoholism
Alcohol addiction is the USA's third largest
health problem after heart disease and cancer. More than 200,000 people
die of it each year. Twenty percent of the total hospital care
expenditure is alcohol related.
Significance of
Environment in Islam (By Prof. Akhtar Mahmood)
Over the
years, our environment has been facing a severe threat. The rivers are
polluted with undesirable chemicals and toxicants, underground water is
being depleted and getting polluted. Forests are being lost at an
alarming rate resulting in environmental degradation. A balance in
oxygen and water in the environment is being lost, which is so important
to sustain and preserve the human civilization on the planet earth.
Big Tobacco: Still
Addicting Kids
Several recent
surveys prove the impact of tobacco marketing on kids. A March 2002
survey by the Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids found that kids are twice
as likely as adults to remember tobacco advertising.
Hunger
Stalking 39 Countries
Acute shortages of corn, the staple food for Zimbabwe's 12.5 million
people, have been attributed to drought and the government's chaotic
program to seize thousands of white-owned commercial farms for
redistribution to blacks.
Islam and Ecology
(by Imam Tajuddin H. Alhilaly)
All the
Islamic teachings agree with logic, and do not clash with science. In
fact, Islam calls for and encourages the acquisition of knowledge.
Islam and the
Environment (Sanjida Afzal)
It is
interesting to indicate here that an increasing number of people in the
West ask about the position of Islam toward the environment. Here are a
few thoughts on the subject which I've come across recently.
The Quran and the
Environment (By Prof. Karem S Ghoneim)
According to
scientists and philosophers man is considered as the major factor in
disturbing the natural balance of the universe. Man interferes
intentionally or unintentionally in the earth’s ecosystems by impairing
its perfect order and precise sequence.
Warning: Philip Morris Targeting Women and Girls
The tobacco industry's targeting of women and girls dates
back to the 1920s and intensified in the late 1960s with the
introduction of women-specific brands, including Philip Morris' Virginia
Slims and its seductive "You’ve Come A Long Way, Baby" advertising
campaign.
‘Negative
Campaigning’ for the New U.S. Organic Food Standards
As the U.S. Department of Agriculture
launches its new official organic food standards, the organic industry
is ratcheting up its ‘negative campaigning’ against conventional foods.
Tobacco and the Environment
The growing, processing and smoking of
tobacco all have major, negative impacts on our local and global
environments.
Water
Quality
Arsenic is one of the most prevalent
contaminants of health concern in drinking water, and is present in the
tap water of over 12 million Americans at a concentration above 10 ppb.
Air
Pollution Fact Sheet
There are many ways to reduce air pollution.
People can contribute significantly to cleaning the air if they take (or
do not take — as the case may be) certain simple actions to reduce air
pollution.
The
Impact of Islam and Its Teachings on Preservation of Individual and
Public Health
Islam differs from other religions in that
it concerns itself with both this life as well as the here after. It is
the only religion which has built on earth a state and a society.
Antidepressants:
Solution or a Profit Margin? (By Hwaa Irfan)
The worst effect of Prozac is an illness called akathisia described as a
unique form of inner torture brought on by psychiatric drugs. Initial
clinical trials, in fact, had warned of this illness as far back as
1978, 10 years before Prozac hit the market.
Cigarette Ingredients
[W]e've always known there were some there. We've even suspected some of
them were toxic and this is what we've been pulling into our lungs from
15 to 40 times a day!
The Slow Death
of a Generation
Big tobacco spends $4.83 BILLION a year on marketing, which is $13.2
Million daily, according to the Federal Trade Commission. Since tobacco
ads do not usually affect the adult smoker who is already "hooked" and
loyal to their brands, it doesn't take much to guess which group is
being targeted by this much advertising money daily.
Are Stars Being
Paid to Smoke in Movies?
While searching for some tobacco-related news one day, I ran across a
cryptic link in an anti-tobacco web page that said "The Infamous
Sylvester Stallone letter".
